Top 10 Bizarre Crimes From

Around the World

True crime is often gruesome, sometimes tragic—but occasionally, it veers into the utterly bizarre. From military misfires to criminal monkey syndicates, these are the strange-but-true cases that sound more like fiction than fact. Here are ten of the weirdest crimes from across the globe.

1. The Great Emu War – Australia

In 1932, Australia declared war—not on another country, but on a population of flightless birds. Following World War I, Australian soldiers turned farmers found their wheat crops under siege by 20,000 emus migrating inland. Unable to stop the invasion, the government deployed soldiers with Lewis machine guns in what became known as the “Great Emu War.” Despite firing thousands of rounds, the emus proved too fast and too spread out to kill efficiently. The birds outran jeeps, scattered quickly, and even dodged bullets. After several failed attempts and only a few hundred confirmed kills, the military retreated, and the emus claimed victory. The event became a national embarrassment and a source of bizarre humor around the world. It remains one of history’s strangest military operations—a “war” where humans, despite advanced weaponry, were bested by oversized birds with no tactical training.

2. The Human Sausage Scandal – Germany (1900s)

In early 20th-century Berlin, whispers spread about a butcher shop that made unusually tasty sausages. But behind the savory flavor was something sinister. Fritz Haarmann, known as “The Butcher of Hanover,” was arrested in 1924 after years of suspicion. Authorities discovered that Haarmann had murdered at least 24 young men and boys—many of them runaways or vagrants. But what horrified the public most wasn’t just the number of victims. It was the widespread rumor that he ground their flesh into sausages and sold them to unsuspecting customers. Though this detail was never conclusively proven, the idea stuck—and terrified a generation. Haarmann was convicted and executed by guillotine, but the case lives on in infamy as one of Europe’s most gruesome urban legends. Whether fact or folklore, the Human Sausage Scandal blurred the line between criminal horror and cannibalistic myth.

3. The Laughing Killer – Mexico

In the late 1990s, Mexican authorities captured Juana Barraza, a former professional wrestler turned serial killer known as La Mataviejitas—“The Little Old Lady Killer.” But it wasn’t just her crimes that horrified the nation—it was her demeanor. Barraza was accused of murdering at least 16 elderly women, often by strangulation, using objects like stethoscopes or phone cords. When she was finally caught in 2006, her behavior stunned investigators. She laughed uncontrollably during her mugshot session and appeared eerily amused throughout early interrogations. This unsettling display earned her the chilling nickname “The Laughing Killer.” Though her motive was partly financial—she stole from her victims—it also seemed deeply personal: her own abusive childhood allegedly involved an older woman who gave her away to a man who raped her. Juana Barraza’s grotesque mix of wrestling theatrics, elderly victims, and unrepentant laughter made her case one of Mexico’s most disturbing and bizarre.

4. The Disappearing Hotel Room – France (1889)

One of the most enduring and baffling urban legends in true crime history stems from the 1889 Paris Exposition. A young Englishwoman and her mother checked into a luxury hotel after the mother suddenly fell ill. When the daughter returned from fetching medicine, her mother—and their room—had vanished. Hotel staff claimed the woman had arrived alone, and no record of her mother could be found. Even the room number had changed. Alone and frantic in a foreign country, the daughter insisted on the truth, but authorities labeled her delusional. According to the tale, the mother had died from a contagious disease, and hotel officials covered it up to protect Paris’s reputation during the Exposition. The story has inspired countless books and films—including Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes. While some historians dismiss it as apocryphal, the eerie possibility of a state-sponsored gaslight continues to capture the imagination.

5. The Ghost Ship Mary Celeste – Atlantic Ocean

On December 4, 1872, the merchant ship Mary Celeste was discovered adrift in the Atlantic Ocean—completely seaworthy but eerily abandoned. The crew, including the captain, his wife, and their two-year-old daughter, had vanished without a trace. The ship’s cargo of alcohol was intact, the food stores were untouched, and there were no signs of violence or struggle. Only the lifeboat was missing. Theories swirled: pirate attack, mutiny, seaquake, waterspout, even alien abduction. But none explained why experienced sailors would abandon a stable ship in open water. The most plausible theory? Fumes from the alcohol cargo may have led the crew to fear an explosion, prompting a temporary evacuation that went tragically wrong. Still, no one from the Mary Celeste was ever found. The ship sailed on as a ghostly enigma—one of maritime history’s most chilling and inexplicable true mysteries.

6. The Pants Thief – Japan

In one of Japan’s most surreal true crime stories, police in Saitama Prefecture raided the home of a 56-year-old man in 2019 after a string of laundry thefts. What they found stunned even seasoned officers: over 400 pairs of women’s underwear, neatly organized and color-coded. The thief had been stealing panties off balconies and clotheslines for years, carefully cataloging them like collectibles. This wasn’t even an isolated case—Japan has a peculiar subculture around “used underwear” vending machines and fetish markets, and laundry theft is disturbingly common in some regions. The case triggered national headlines and public disgust, along with uncomfortable discussions about voyeurism, sexual obsession, and legal loopholes for such crimes. The man was charged with theft, but the psychological aspect drew more attention than the legal one. The visual of endless rows of stolen panties transformed what might have been a petty crime into a bizarre symbol of hidden perversion.

7. The Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist – Canada

In what sounds like the plot of a sticky crime comedy, one of Canada’s most valuable commodities—maple syrup—became the target of a massive heist. Between 2011 and 2012, thieves siphoned off nearly 3,000 tons of syrup from a strategic reserve warehouse in Quebec. The stolen syrup was worth over $18 million USD. Investigators eventually discovered that barrels had been emptied and replaced with water, and the syrup smuggled out in trucks, sold on the black market. The operation was so sophisticated it took months to unravel. When the dust settled, over 20 people were arrested, and the heist was dubbed “the sweetest crime in Canadian history.” The case revealed the surprising seriousness of Canada’s maple syrup industry, complete with cartel-like control, price fixing, and stockpiling. It may have lacked bloodshed, but the sheer scale and absurdity of the syrup caper secured its place in global true crime lore.

8. The Monkey Mafia of Jaipur – India

In the pink city of Jaipur, India, tourists and locals alike have faced an unexpected threat: organized monkey crime. Roving bands of rhesus macaques, often working in eerily coordinated fashion, snatch sunglasses, wallets, phones, and even food right out of people's hands. What’s more bizarre? In some cases, these monkey gangs are trained by humans, who later pose as “rescuers” to return stolen items—for a fee. Locals have dubbed it the “Monkey Mafia,” and it’s not entirely a joke. In certain areas, feeding monkeys is tied to religious beliefs, making it difficult for authorities to control the problem. Incidents have turned violent, with reports of monkeys biting people, swarming rooftops, and even causing fatal accidents. Despite surveillance, monkey thefts continue with audacious frequency, blurring the line between nuisance and organized animal crime. It’s one of the world’s strangest examples of interspecies mischief—and manipulation.

9. The Nithari Cannibal Killings – India

In 2006, police raided a home in the upscale suburb of Noida, near Delhi, after several children went missing. What they discovered was a horror beyond imagination. Human skulls, bones, and body parts were unearthed in the drains behind the house. Businessman Moninder Singh Pandher and his domestic servant Surinder Koli were arrested and accused of murdering—and in Koli’s case, sexually assaulting and cannibalizing—at least 19 children and young women. The victims, mostly from impoverished families, had vanished without serious police investigation, revealing shocking negligence and possible corruption. Koli confessed to luring victims with sweets, killing them, and consuming their organs. Some believe the number of victims may be higher. The case outraged the nation, not just for its brutality, but for how class and indifference let it go unnoticed. The Nithari killings remain one of modern India’s darkest and most bizarre criminal sagas.

10. The Killer Clown Craze – USA (2016)

In 2016, a bizarre and unsettling phenomenon swept across the United States: reports of creepy clowns lurking near schools, forests, and neighborhoods—often staring silently, holding knives, or chasing people. It began with a few viral videos, but soon ballooned into a nationwide panic. Police departments received hundreds of calls about clown sightings, some hoaxes, others disturbingly real. Schools went into lockdown, Halloween stores saw clown costume bans, and even professional clowns protested the damage to their image. Though few actual crimes occurred, the fear was palpable. At least one teenager was stabbed in an incident tied to the craze, and several people were arrested for threats or impersonations. The killer clown craze was a chaotic blend of internet hysteria, urban legend, and primal fear. It exposed how quickly society can descend into mass panic—and how childhood icons can morph into modern nightmares.
